Kestrels Claim Maximum Six Points in Tough Double Header at Bellew Road
Going into the second match, the biggest challenge wasn’t the opposition — it was the mindset. Having already beaten them once, the danger was complacency creeping in.
After some brilliant suggestions from the fantastic Kestrels parents, we made the boys switch shirts to yellow for the second game in the hope of bringing some fresh energy.
But unfortunately, the second game didn’t start the way we had hoped.
The match quickly became scrappy, tense and hard fought. The Kestrels were still creating the better chances, but the intensity and urgency from the first game just wasn’t quite there. At 0–0, and with the opposition playing freely with nothing to lose, the pressure started to build.
At half-time the message was clear: if we wanted all six points, we needed to raise the tempo and find another gear.
The boys responded.
Still searching for that breakthrough, a bold tactical change to a more attacking 2–4–2 formation was made — a calculated risk to try and swing the momentum.
And it worked.
Some brilliant link-up play saw us get down the right wing and create the opportunity for a superb cross into the box. Maxi attacked the delivery with determination and powered a fantastic header past the goalkeeper.
1–0 Kestrels. Breakthrough achieved.
With the momentum now firmly on their side, the Kestrels pushed again. A dangerous corner swung into the box saw Joseph rise highest, meeting the ball with a strong header that found the back of the net.
2–0.
The boys weren’t finished yet.
Archie showed incredible strength to win possession before playing a perfectly timed pass into Jack, who showed fantastic awareness and selflessness to square the ball across goal where Jesse was waiting to calmly finish.
3–0. Game sealed. Six points secured.
Overall, it was a brilliant day for the Mytchett Athletic Kestrels. Two hard-fought victories, six points collected, and the team continues to strengthen their position at the top of the league.
There are tougher tests ahead, and the boys know they’ll need to maintain their intensity from start to finish. But performances like this show the character, teamwork and quality running through this squad.
Another big step forward for the Kestrels.
And the season is only getting more exciting. ⚽🟡🔵
