KESTRELS FALL NARROWLY IN TOP-OF-THE-TABLE BATTLE

A tough morning for the Kestrels in what was always going to be a challenging clash against Eversley & California, with the opportunity there to extend our lead at the summit—if the performance matched the occasion.

We came into the game already up against it, with very low numbers and disruption from the clock change. A big thank you to Stan for stepping in and waiting to help the squad out—it was massively appreciated, and apologies that we couldn’t utilise him and get him some minutes on the pitch.

From the start, we just didn’t quite find our rhythm. We allowed the opposition into the game early, and as the minutes passed, their confidence grew. We struggled to move the ball with our usual intent, not getting it out wide often enough or supplying our attackers in the way we know we can. There were too many touches, not enough end product, and ultimately we didn’t play the football that has brought us success this season.

In front of goal, it simply wasn’t our day. We created moments but lacked that bit of luck, while credit must go to the opposition who defended resolutely, putting bodies on the line and frustrating us throughout.

Defensively, there were real positives. Logan put in a strong performance, dominant in his 1v1 battles and constantly trying to drive the team up the pitch. As a unit, we stood firm for large periods and gave ourselves a platform to build from.

It would be wrong not to acknowledge that officiating decisions had an impact on the flow of the game. Once again, there were frustrations around the level of officiating for a fixture of this importance, and these types of games would benefit from more experienced officials. However, it’s important we recognise that referees are also developing, and we cannot allow decisions to cloud our performance or affect our mindset. We were also fortunate on one key moment that kept us in the game.

The deciding moment came when our opponents took their chance well, making it count in a tight game. They executed their game plan effectively—staying organised, frustrating us, and capitalising when it mattered.

With limited numbers, we lacked options from the bench to change the game, though we did our best to adjust shape and push for a response. Despite the effort, it just wasn’t to be our day.

Now, the focus shifts to how we respond.

We need to find our way back to the team we were at the start of the season—relentless, sharp, and confident in our play. It’s natural at this stage of the season for fatigue or pressure to creep in, and we need to be honest about that. If it’s pressure, the lads need to get back to enjoying their football. If it’s fatigue, then rest and recovery will be key, and we’ll look to see if we can provide a break over the Easter period before regrouping on 12th April. (More to follow).

We also have to recognise that every team raises their level when they play against the league leaders—that’s something we must embrace, not be surprised by.

Today is a setback, but also a learning opportunity. A chance to reset, refocus, and go again. The league is still in our hands if we want it enough.

🏆 Player of the Match – Logan

A superb performance at the heart of the defence from Logan, who led by example throughout. He was outstanding in his 1v1 battles, consistently getting to the ball first and showing real strength in the air.

Beyond his defensive duties, Logan also looked to drive the team forward, showing a willingness to turn defence into attack whenever possible. A committed performance that stood out on a frustrating day for the team. Well done Logan! 👏
